Miniature zushi with a tiny wooden Buddhist image (Dainichi-nyorai) inside. Zushi is a cupboard-like container with double doors in which a Buddhist image, Sutra, or some other objects is kept at a temple or at home. This one is made of wood and coated with black urushi and gilded inside. The Dainichi-nyorai is a wood sculpture and original so that it is not removable. It might have been taken with a traveler. The Dainichi-nyorai is very well done in details...

Wooden Shinto statue called shinzo which is a god of Shinto put in a shrine. Shinzo was made between late Heian and Kamakura period (12th to 14th century). It has a "kanmuri" on the head and wearing a "kariginu" which used to be a clothing of a court aristocrat. Some parts are lost and many moth holes which are natural for the shinzo of this age. These are two wooden miniature Fudos ( Cetaka ) who is the incarnate of Dainichi Nyorai, the highest ranking Buddha. It is said that he can change evil minds of demons and make them good. He has an expression of rage, holding a sword in the right hand, the kensaku ( originally a trap for birds or small animals ) in the left hand ( Both are lost of these Fudos ). One is standing on a rock, but this wooden one is not an original. Right-H: 12cm W: 7.5cm Left-H: 10.5cm W: 4.2cm
