Small boro futonji made of many kinds of hand-spun and natural indigo dyed cotton fragments such as stripes, plain, checks. The ground cloth is not large one sheet cloth but it is patchwork of many small fragments. It is said in Northern area, cotton was not cultivated because of the colder climate, so that it was very precious. The bunch of the cotton rags and tatters were shipped there and people bought it and made it into noragi (work wear), futonji, bags and so on...

The utensils are: a tea bowl, a tea caddy, a leaf-tea jar, a kettle, a a bamboo whisk, a tea pot, chopsticks for charcoals, a feather fire-making fan, a set of earthen pot and furace, tea saucers, a basket for tea set and so on. Miyako-jufu man's kimono hand-woven of choma (ramie) and dyed with Ryukyu-ai. The wefts and the warps are hand plied. Miyako-jofu has been woven in Miyako Island in Okinawa since 14th century. It was called "Satsuma-jofu" in Edo period as the island belonged to Satsuma feudal domain. It was imposed as tax. It is time-consuming process of thread making, thread plying, weaving as matching the wefts and warps kasuri patterns. It is pounded with mallet to make it shiny after the cloth is woven...

Shima-cho, a sample book of Tanbafu with 50 fragments. Tanbafu is handwoven of hand-spun cotton and pongee silk threads which are both vegetable dyed. It was called Saji momen before and named Tanbafu later. It was mainly used for kimono and futonji. It had been woven in Tanba region in Hyogo prefecture since early 19th century, however it was once disappeared but Uemura Rokuro, weavers and other people successfully restored the textile in early 20 C...
