Sakiori sodenashi (vest) worn over noragi (work wear) or kimono. The wefts are indigo-dyed cotton strips torn from old cloth such as kimono, furoshiki or futonji. Warps are asa (hemp). The part of the trimming cloth and side belts are replaced. It has beautiful sashiko cloth in the shoulder for decoration as well as strength. This style of sakiori sodenashi is from Wakasa in Fukui prefecture. In excellent condition. Late 19th to mid 20th century. 35.5cm x 71cm

Asa (can be hemp or ramie) child's kimono with weft kasuri (ikat) design whose motif is a dragon. The wefts are hand-plied and dyed with indigo. The belts in front are made of wool muslin and thin indigo dyed silk in the top and in the lower back inside. In excellent condition except for light stains in the white cloth in the back of the panels. Probably made in San-in district on the Japan Sea side. Late 19th to early 20th century. 87cm x 89cm

Baby's patched kimono made of many kinds of cotton fragments such as stripes, plain, kasuri, katazome (stencil-dyeing), checks and so on. The fragments are more than 60 pieces. Some are hand-spun and others are machine woven. In some districts, mothers made a patched kimono for an expecting baby praying for the baby's healthy growth and dedicated to a shrine or a temple later, which is called "Hyaku-toku Kimono", however it is not sure this one is an example of it...

Ojiya-chijimi woman's summer kimono produced in Ojiya in Niigata prefecture. It has been woven since early Edo period (early 17th century). It is woven with choma (ramie) and wefts are tightly twisted so that it gives shrinkage on the surface, like crepe. It has large cross kasuri pattern which is double ikat. In excellent condition.
