This is a noren ( curtain ) made of shina-fu which is the bast fiber taken from the bark of the shina tree. The shina tree grows widely in Japan and shina-fu had been woven since ancient time, however it is woven only in Yamagata or Niigata prefecture these days. These are plates with hand-painted Kenzan style design of autumn flowers such as chrysanthemums and balloon flowers. They have kanji letters "Kenzan" in the back. Ogata Kenzan ( 1663~1743 ) was a potter as well as a Rinpa school painter. He was a younger brother of Ogata Korin who was a prominent painter and a founder of Rinpa school painting. They collaborated in some of potteries. Kenzan style potteries with "Kenzan" sign have been made in large number till these days...
