This is a Korean wrapping cloth, chogappo which is made of hand-woven asa ( linen ) and all hand sewn. "Pojagi" is a general name for wrapping cloth and "chogappo" is one kind of pojagi which is made with patch-work with silk as well as asa ( reference source: "Korean Embroidery and Wrapping Cloths from the Choson Dynasty" published by Japan Art & Culture Association in 1995 ). This is a wooden large size kanban (shop sign) of "ryo-gae-ya". Ryo-gae means "exchange" and ryo-gae-ya did banking business, too. Same kanji letters "ryo-gae" are engraved in both sides. It is in the shape of weight. It has many dents, chips and mending with lacquer. ca. mid or late 19th C. 53cm x 58cm 21.0"x22.8" 5.5cm 2.2" thick

A nice bamboo flower hanging basket of which shape suggests a case for a hatchet. Meiji era ( 1868~1912 ). In excellent condition. 12cm x 12cm 4.7"x4.7" Length 20cm 7.9"

This is a wooden sculpture of Daikoku-sama or Daikokuten, one of the seven Japanese gods who bring luck. He is standing on the straw rice bags, holding a lucky hammer in one hand and a big sack on the shoulder. He is the god of agriculture or fertility. 18 or 19th century. In good condition. This is a hishaku ( ladle ) which is made of wood and coated with urushi, black urushi outside and red one inside. It was used for water, however it is not clear where it was used. 19th century. This is a large wooden container with a lid for sweets with beautiful mikie which is hand painted with gold urushi ( Japanese lacquer ) and whose motifs are autumn plants. In good condition except for a dent on the lid. Meiji period ( 1868~1912 ). Diameter of bowl 25cm 9.8" Height with lid 12cm 4.7"

This is a beautiful andon, lantern made of wood and coated with red urushi ( Japanese lacquer ). It has two circles and each one has Japanese paper half pasted and one of them can turn so that the light source can be controlled. In good condition but has some chips and scratches. The Japanese paper is replaced with new one. 19th century. Height:86cm Diameter:32cm

This is a beautiful andon( lantern ) which is made of wood and coated with brown urushi ( japanese lacquer ). The light source was oil or a candle in old days, but a light bulb is replaced for this one. You can see the prominent craftsmanship of wood, especially in the round cover. In excellent condition.
