This is a han-juban ( short under kimono )called "ase-hajiki" which literally means "sweat shedder" in Japanese. It is made of hand-woven asa ( hemp ) and warps are twisted ( it is called "mojiri ori" ). It is dyed with natural indigo and produced in Tohoku district ( North-east ). The sleeves are made of white cotton cloth. In good condition. Late 19th century. 89cm x 74cm

These are two pieces of cloth which were girl's kimono. The wefts as well as warps are hand-plied hemp and dyed with benibana ( safflower ) which was very precious dye. Benibana was mostly grown in Shonai region in Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku district. These pieces have beautiful shibori ( tie-dye ). Each piece has vertical hand-sewn seams. In good condition. This is a noren which is made of hand-woven cloth, asa ( hemp ) threads for wefts and cotton threads for warps. It has "Genji-guruma" crest and bold tsutsugaki auspicious motifs such as bamboo, pine tree and plum tree blossoms. These motifs are rather common, but the hand-painting is very lively and strong. Tsutsugaki is freehand-painting using rice paste as resist. It is probably not for a shop but one of bridal goods...

This is a uniform hanten worn at the Gion matsuri ( or Gion-e ) which is the festival of Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto. It is held from July 17 to July 24 every year. Yamahoko procession is one of the main events. This hanten is made of handwoven hemp and it has katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) pattern dyed with natural indigo.
