This is a cape, called "Maru-gappa" or "Hikimawashi" which is made of hand-woven and natural indigo dyed cotton kasuri cloth on both sides. It was worn in case of travel or rain. It has oil coated Japanese paper for waterproof inside. The word "kappa" came from Portuguese "capa". The Portuguese first came to Japan in ca. 17th century. The former half of the 19th century. In excellent condition except for buttons are lost. Length 109cm 43" Width when it is extended 236cm 7ft9"

These are bags made of hand-spun cotton and have katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) pattern. They are dyed with natural indigo and natural yellow dye. It is not sure what was put in, probably swords or alike. Generally in good condition but each has minor damages such as small moth holes. The latter half of the 19th century. This is a cotton katazome ( stencil-resist-dyeing ) futon cover which is handwoven and natural indigo dyed. The katazome is very fine and elaborate and the texture is nicely thick. In excellent condition except for a few mending patches. Meiji period ( 1868~1912 ). 134cm x 174cm 53" x 68"1/2

This is a futonji made of hand-spun cotton and vegetable dyed ( natural indigo & yellow ). It has beautiful katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) mum motif. This is a sodenashi ( sleeveless ) han-juban ( under kimono ) made of hand-spun cotton with katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) and dyed with natural indigo. The jishiro ( white ground ) katazome is left fewer than indigo ground one. The latter half of the 19th century. In good condition except for two small holes in front ( 2cm x 2cm, 8mm x 8mm ), one in the back ( 1cm x 1cm ) and two minor cuts. 40.5cm x 54cm

In good condition but it has a few stains in the lower back and some moth holes and damages in the lining of the collar which is made of wool muslin. This is a piece of Narumi-kongata cloth. Narumi-kongata is katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) which looks like shibori ( tie-dyeing ). Shibori textile has been produced in Arimatsu Narumi region in Aichi prefecture since 17th century. Compared with time-consuming shibori textile, Narumi-kongata textile can be produced more amount in same pattern. It is made of hand-woven cotton and dyed with natural indigo...

This is a noren ( shop curtain ) with shop's logo. It is made of thick hand-spun cotton and dyed with bengara ( iron oxide ), one kind of pigments. In good condition but has some dirty part in the white logo. 19th century. 101cm x 171cm

This is a furoshiki ( wrapping cloth ) made of recycled cotton cloth. These cloth was made by Kurume kasuri weavers union in 1903 ( Meiji 36 ) when Kurume kasuri ( in Fukuoka prefecture in Kyushu ) won the first prize at the Fifth National Industrial Exposition. This is a lining for an obi ( sash ) made of several kinds of hand-spun cotton and all the cloth are dyed with natural dye. These pieces are: the blue shima ( stripe ) katazome ( stencil dye ), the brown kasuri, check and plain. In good condition. 19th century, probably Edo period 20cm x 3m2cm
