This is an oval box with a lid made of bentwood ( magemono ) and coated with urushi. The technique called "magemono" is bending wood plates such as Japanese cedar or Japanese cypress and bound with bark strips of the cherry tree or bamboo strips. This box has beautiful patterns of cherry strips. What was put in this box is not clear. It has three different owner's names. In good condition but has some scratches, chips and some parts urushi came off. 19th or early 20th century...

This is a kneading bowl which is hand-carved and beautifully aged. It was used for kneading food such as soba, noodle, dumpling and so on. It has a crack and a nail for mending. Early 20th century or earlier. Diameter: 30.5cm Height: 7.5cm

This is a beautiful andon, lantern made of wood and coated with red urushi ( Japanese lacquer ). It has two circles and each one has Japanese paper half pasted and one of them can turn so that the light source can be controlled. In good condition but has some chips and scratches. The Japanese paper is replaced with new one. 19th century. Height:86cm Diameter:32cm

This is a beautiful andon( lantern ) which is made of wood and coated with brown urushi ( japanese lacquer ). The light source was oil or a candle in old days, but a light bulb is replaced for this one. You can see the prominent craftsmanship of wood, especially in the round cover. In excellent condition. This is a wooden large size kanban (shop sign) of "ryo-gae-ya". Ryo-gae means "exchange" and ryo-gae-ya did banking business, too. Same kanji letters "ryo-gae" are engraved in both sides. It is in the shape of weight. It has many dents, chips and mending with lacquer. ca. mid or late 19th C. 53cm x 58cm 21.0"x22.8" 5.5cm 2.2" thick

This wooden tobacco tray with drawers is an another example of beautiful craftsmanship in old days. Two copper containers are for ash (larger one) and water(smaller one). Noshi (an ornament put on a gift ) pattern is carved out in the back. In good condition except for two chips in front. Meiji era ( 1868~1912). Height 16.5cm 6.5" Width 24.5cm 9.6" Depth 14cm 5.5"
