This is a sashiko ( quilting ) rug or futon made of hand-spun and natural indigo dyed cotton. It has several layers of cotton cloth pieces inside. In the cold regions such as Tōhoku ( North-east ) or Japan Sea side area, cotton was precious as it could not grow, so they bought cotton pieces or recycled cotton pieces for stuffing of the futon. You can see the cotton layers inside from the part where seams are open. It has sashiko ( quilting ) with thick and natural indigo-dyed hemp threads...

This is a boy's festive kimono with motif of the carp and stream which is the symbol of success in life. It is originated from the old Chinese tale that only carp among other fish could go against the rapid stream of the Yellow River in China and entered the Dragon Gate and became a dragon. It is made of thick cotton. The dye technique is "kata Yuzen-zome" which is stencil-dying and hand-painting. In good condition except for some dirt and stains. Late 19th to early 20th century...

This is a nobori made of cotton cloth with hand-painted Shōki and oni (ogre). The nobori with pictures of worriors has been flied on the Tango-no-Sekku ( the boy's festival ) since mid Edo period (18th century). The pigment colors are faded but in good condition. This is a furosaki byobu, a folding screen which is a one of the utensils used in the tea ceremony. It is put near the furnace. It is made of wood frame and reversible, one side is Japanese paper with Umebachi-mon pattern and the other side is ajiro, wickerwork. In excellent condition. This is an "eboshi", a cap which used to be worn by the court nobles since Heian period ( ca. the end of 8th to the early 11th century ), but it is worn by the shinto priests or in the ceremonies these days. This kind of eboshi has been made since Edo period ( 15th to 19th century ). It is made of wrinkled paper and coated with urushi. This is a L size kome-bukuro ( rice bag ) made of many kinds of hand-spun cotton with katazome, stripes and checks. Komebukuro was used when people dedicated rice to shrines or they exchange it as gifts. In good condition but has several mending patches. This is a set of ready-made obi ( sash ) for kimono which is patchwork of red satin pieces and minomushi ( bagworm ). It is a moth larva and makes a bag-like nidus which is made of dead leaves and dead twigs and hangs from tree with a string. It is called minomushi as the nidus looks like "mino" which is a rain-cape made of rice straw. Bags and purses made of minomushi were popular in early Showa ( 1930s,or 40s ), but few are produced these days. This sash is homemade and sewn by hand...

This is a silk fukuro-obi for a formal kimono. Fukuro-obi is a sash woven in tube-shape and usually one side has patterns and the other side is plain. It has beautiful karakusa pattern woven with colorful threads for wefts. Produced in Nishijin in Kyoto. Used and has some wear in the pattern and a few ink stains in the back.
