This is a cotoon shibori kimono with lining. It is not clear that the shibori textile was made in Arimatsu Narumi region in Aichi Pref. or Akita Pref. in Tohoku, however it is from a collector in Tohoku. Generally in good condition except for some yellowish part in the neck. Mid 20th century. 128cm x 131cm

This is a furoshiki ( wrapping cloth ) with beautiful sashiko ( quilting ), made of handwoven cotton cloth dyed with natural indigo. The owner's name is patched with sewing machine, however other sashiko stitches are all hand-stitched. It is rare that such variations of sashiko are all in one furoshiki. It has a few holes and a lost part but in good condition as a whole. The latter half of the 19th or early 20th century. 149cm x 160cm

This is a cotton kimono with fine weft & warp kasuri pattern on white ground. It is probably produced in Yamato region ( Nara Pref. ) whose feature is handwoven white ground kasuri. In excellent condition. Late 19th to mid 20th century. 126cm x 131cm

This is a noren ( curtain ) made of handwoven cotton dyed with natural indigo. It has daruma motif woven of weft kasuri threads. Daruma is a roly-poly papier-mache doll modeled after the Indian Buddhist monk Bodhidarma who founded Zen Buddhism. It is Yumihama kasuri which was made in Yumigahama in Tottori prefecture facing to the Japan Sea and its feature is picture woven of weft kasuri. Generally in good condition but has a few mending patches and some of the stitches are unraveled...

This is a juban ( under kimono ) made of soft silk and has beautiful shibori ( tie-dyeing ) motifs such as pine tree, plum blossom and bamboo. Generally in good condition but has light stains in the lining. The former half of the 20th century. 124cm x 131cm

This is a small boro top and pants. It has many mending patches which are mostly hand-woven and natural indigo dyed cotton fragments. In colder areas such as Japan Sea side and Tohoku, cotton could not been cultivated and it was so precious that people wore till it was worn out and mended. The former half of the 20th century.
