This is a furoshiki ( wrapping cloth ) made of thick hand-spun cotton with tsutsugaki plants in pots motif, which are bamboo, pine tree, orchid and plum flower. This is a futonji made of hand-woven cotton and natural indigo dyed. The ground cloth has white thread wefts and natural indigo dyed warps. The check pattern is katazome ( paper-stencil dyeing ). This is a purse or pouch made of hand-woven silk brocade ( nishiki ). It has the traditional "Yūsoku moyō" which is originated from China and the pattern was used for the noble's outfits from Heian period ( A.D.794~1185 ). It is vintage, probably made in the latter half of the 20th century, but the weaving technique is authentic and the cord is also hand-braided. Made in Nishijin in Kyoto. This is a small bag made of shina-fu which is the bast fiber taken from the bark of the shina tree. The shina tree grows widely in Japan and the shina-fu had been woven since ancient time and used for a kaya ( mosquito net ), the grain bag and the hanten ( jacket ) etc, however it is woven only in Yamagata or Niigata prefecture these days. This is an unlined woman's summer kimono made of horizontal silk gauze called "ro". It has the katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) dragonfly and weed design. This is a sakiori rug or futon. Sakiori is the recycled textile woven of strips for wefts which are torn from used cotton or silk cloth and cotton or asa ( hemp ) threads for warps. Sakiori has been woven mainly in the cold regions such as Tohoku and Japan Sea side. This one is woven of cotton strips for wefts and cotton threads for warps. It has beautiful mixed colors of indigo and others. It has many mending patches and loose wefts. Late 19th or early 20th century. 134cm x 130cm

This is a sashiko diaper with sashiko ( quilting ). It is from the Chinese tribe who live in the mountainous region in southern China ( Mēo tribe ). It has a mending patch and some holes but washed and clean. 20th century. 31cm x 34.5cm

This is a sashiko ( quilting ) rug or futon made of hand-spun and natural indigo dyed cotton. It has several layers of cotton cloth pieces inside. In the cold regions such as Tōhoku ( North-east ) or Japan Sea side area, cotton was precious as it could not grow, so they bought cotton pieces or recycled cotton pieces for stuffing of the futon. You can see the cotton layers inside from the part where seams are open. It has sashiko ( quilting ) with thick and natural indigo-dyed hemp threads...
