This is an old hagi-isho ( under kimono ) made of many kinds of recycled silk kimono fragments. Hagi-isho means kimono made of many pieces sewn together. It has many kinds of silk cloth such as tsumugi ( pongee silk ) with shibori, plain silk with stripe, tsumugi with itajime shibori ( board-clamp dyeing ) for upper body and wool muslin with katazome for the sleeves. All the cloths, besides the wool muslin are hand-woven and vegetable dyed. The last photo shows how to make board-clamp dyeing. In excellent condition except for a rip in one of the sleeves. Late 19th to early 20th century. 125cm x 137cm
