Japanese Antique Textile Shugensha's Kimono & Ornament
These are a top and a bottom worn by a shugensha ( holy man ) when he practiced shugendo. From the Nara period, people started to enter the mountains to undergo training there, and in the Heian period, when it was influenced by esoteric Buddhism, the training started to be called shugendo. The top has Sanscrit letters and many stamps of holy places in Yoshino mountains in Nara prefecture such as Kinpusen, Zaoji, Sodehuriyama etc. It is made of hand-plied asa ( hemp ). In good condition. The latter half of the 19th century. The top:124cm x 98cm The bottom:48.5cm x 79cm The ornament:70cm
