| This is a katsugi or kazuki which was worn by a noble woman before Edo period ( before the beginning of the 17th century ). It was also worn by a commoner woman later overhead as well as over kimono when she went out. It is made of hand-woven thin plain weave silk and has beautiful Yuzen-zome ( dye ) paintings of chickens, chicks and plants. Yuzen-zome is the dyeing technique which is free-hand-painting using rice paste as resist for white outlining and also colored by hand. The ground and the middle blue part are dyed with natural indigo and paintings are also natural dye. In excellent condition except for the damage in the black silk satin lining of the collar.
