| This is an andon ( lantern ) which is originally used in the tea ceremony held at night. It is made of urushi coated wood for the bottom and the lid, bamboo for the handle and washi ( Japanese paper ) for the hood. The lid is coated with black urushi and the urushi technique for the base is called fuki-urushi that is once coated urushi is wiped so as to the beautiful wood grain can be seen. The lid has a hair line crack, however no problem for use. It has an original wooden box. In good condition except for the flaw mentioned. Late 19th to early 20th century.
