Japanese Vintage Wood Sculpture Miniature Masks
These are wood curved miniature masks of various faces. They are: Okame ( or Otafuku ), Hannya, Hyottoko, Okame, Man, Old man ( clockwise from top left ). Okame or Otafuku is a derogatory name for a female clown or middle aged woman with an ugly face. Hannya is also a woman's face with horns with expression of rage. Hyottoko is a name of male clown or derogatory name for a man. It is said he is blowing on a fire with a bamboo pipe. Generally in good condition except for some dirt and some hairs of the old man are lost. Late 19th to mid 20th century. Approx: 5~6.5cm x 6.6~9.8cm
