This is a nobori (vertical banner) which was post on the Tango-no-sekku (the Boy's Festival ) on May 5th which is for expressing the hope that each boy in the family will grow up healthy and strong. The iris leaves are put in the bath on the day as their flagrance is believed to drive away bad air. The banner has motifs of stream and iris which are katazome stencil-dyeing ). It is made of hand-spun cotton. In good condition except for some stains. The former half of the 20th century. 34cm x 3m76cm
