| This is a yogi, a kind of futon in the shape of kimono. The outside cloth is asa (hemp) and the lining is cotton katazome ( stencil-dye ) and asa cloth. All the cloth are hand-woven and vegetable dyed. It is stuffed with "okuso" which is the hemp wastes produced in the making of hemp threads. In the cold region, such as Tohoku, cotton is very precious as it can not grow so that "okuso" was stuffed instead of cotton. It is very heavy. In good condition except for a few small holes and some mending patches. 19th century. 150cm x 150cm | |||||||||||||||
