Japanese Antique Textile Embroidered FuKusa Edo
Sold. Thank you.

This is a fukusa, a gift cover put over a gift in the formal occasion in old days. It has beautiful embroidered motifs which show the prominent embroidery technique of Edo period. The motifs are a sen-nin (hermit) and a deer, which is originated from the old Chinese Daoism or Taoism, indigenous religion in China. The ground cloth is silk satin and embroidery threads look all vegetable dyed. It has silk crepe lining which is dyed with benibana (safflower). In good condition for this age except for some dirt in the lining and two tassels are lost. Late Edo period (the former half of the 19th century) 67.5cm x 77.5cm
