Hyotan (gourd) made of paper yarn and urshi coated. It is handwoven of Japanese paper@yarn which is made from kozo tree fiber and coated with urushi, lacquer. This paper craft is called "kami nagato" or "nagato" and it is durable and waterproof so that it was made into many kinds of folk crafts such as bowl, tobacco pipe case, lunch box, water bottle and so on in Edo period. It has hand-painted maple leaf design with red urushi. This gourd was probably used for liquid. 19th century. In excellent condition. H:23.5cm Diameter: 12.5cm
