| Mochica phase IV (500 - 700 AD) polychrome stirrup portrait vessel (see Christopher Donnan's Moche Portraits from Ancient Peru, page 108) . Described by Donnan as "most spectacular", a Very important piece. The birds are attached to each side of the outer forehead and have prominent Caruncle on the crown similar to the male Andean Condor. One wing from each bird depicted in relief wrapping rearward on portrait head. Ears are pierced without ornaments. Painted eyebrows and facial hair. Headband with elaborate cape extending down over back of neck. Cream, brown skin and dark brown as shown. Spout and back of stirrup reattached. Left avian head reattached and reconstructed from pieces. Probe impact mark behind right ear. 11 inches/28 cm tall, 5.5 inches/14 cm wide. Acquired pre 1967, private East coast collection. | ||
