CHANCAY DOUBLE BODIED VESSEL
Chancay Zoomorphic, Anthropomorphic Double body vessel. Ca. A.D. 80 - 1200. Acquired by descent pre-1967. 7.5inches/19cm tall and 7 inches18cm wide. Chocolate on terracotta. Geometric design on all surfaces. As part of the strap handle connecting the two halves, and on the smaller side of the vessel, there is a person standing with a dog like creature on his shoulders. At the feet of the person is a monkey laying on its back. Monkey holding hands to mouth, tail curled in relief. The dog like creature does not have arms. Either the arms never existed or they may have been lost during the creation of the piece. On the back side of the tall or cupped portion of the pot is what appears to be a bird or lizard, with beak or snout extending over edge of cup. Very fine condition.
