Ivory Carving Japanese Lucky God of Wisdom Statue

A finely detailed Japanese ivory carving of Jurōjin, God of Wisdom & Longevity and one of the 7 Taoist Lucky Gods. Also known as Gama, he is holding a knobby staff with the scroll of life attached which is said to hold the secret of longevity. A lover of saki Jurojin is holding a wine cup in this left hand. The clothing is textured and 2 colors, black and dark brown. This was effect achieved by carefully applying ground gunpowder mixed with a natural resin (bonding agent) to the ivory. Early American sailors, used this same method to fill in the etched lines in scrimshawed ivory whales teeth carvings. It is in excellent condition, no cracks, no chips, etc., he measures 5" high x 2.5 widest.
