| A Japanese ivory carving of Benzaiten, the only Goddess in the Seven Gods of Good Fortune. Benzaiten is the Goddess of Beauty, Art, Music and Knowledge. She is also known as a protector of children and the nation. The clothing is textured and 2 colors, black and dark brown. This was effect achieved by carefully applying ground gunpowder mixed with a natural resin (bonding agent) to the ivory. Early American sailors, used this same method to fill in the etched lines in scrimshawed ivory whales teeth carvings. In excellent condition, no chips, no cracks except for one small hairline from age on bottom (see last photo), she measures 5" high x 2.5" widest. | ||||||||||
