Xianfeng Famille Rose Porcelain Vases, Mark and Period

An outstanding matched pair of Xianfeng vases with the underglaze blue Imperial mark which reads “Great Qing Xianfeng Period Made” and dates circa 1850-1861, one of the shortest periods in the Qing Dynasty. Each vase has 3 panels or medallions with court scenes on the front; the same motif is repeated on the back side. The rest of the background is decorated with auspicious Taoist symbols, butterflies, and flowers. The enamels are vibrant and exhibit very little wear. These were made to be gifted to someone of the scholar class or to a visiting dignitary. In this case, because they are in the US, it is most likely that they were given to a dignitary. If the seal had a double blue ring around it, it would have been made for the Imperial family, and not as a gift. The colors are closest to the last four photographs. Guaranteed original and of the period. In excellent condition, no cracks, no chips, no hairlines, they measure 15.5 inches (39.4 cm) high.
