| Textiles are very important to the Kuba peoples of Zaire (Democratic Republic of the Congo), for virtually all members of adult society are involved in cloth production. The production of textiles provides an interesting social commentary, for Kuba men and women are responsible for different tasks in this process. The raffia used in Kuba cloths was probably cultivated in the fields and then woven on a loom by men. Women were most likely responsible for the finishing touches, such as the embroidery. Raffia cloth, made from palm leaf fiber, is used in constructing almost all Kuba textiles, and has specific meaning in terms of funeral rites. This is because raffia is a potent symbol of security and continuity for the Kuba, acting to link the living to each other as well as to the recently deceased. | |
