Unique folk wooden Buddhist (Pure Land school ('Jodo-shu')) statue with primitive and tasteful facial expression, dated back to Taisho period, 1918 as signed. Considered to be a motif of monk 'Honen' in the standing pose of 'Amida Nyorai', according to the suggestive details of brief sutra of Jodo-shu (called 'Kangyo-mon') at back and Sanskrit character, 'hriiH' symbolizing Amitabha (Amida Nyorai) at the center chest position. Also, indicated as "Made by Eko" at the bottom, which may be possibly named from its characters of Eko-ji temple (Kyoto) of Jodo-shu, though not sure (but make sense?). Pure antique condition with long crack as seen, but still highly recommended. approx. 21.6cm in height, 5.6cm in width, 4cm in depth (8.5in, 2.2in, 1.6in) |
