Mature wooden pattern coated with lacquer, used for making paper-mache dolls of Daruma (Bodhidharma), - "Father of Zen Buddhism", dated back to Meiji-Taisho period, early 20th century.
Label at bottom, stuck on by the previous owner for its provenance, as "Koshigaya type (Saitama Prefecture), Osawa, Koshigaya city".
A "hidden" Japanese Mingei folk art piece today. Fine antique condition as is, with peeling of lacquer and expected flaws.
