Japanese Mingei Shinto Wood Carving Horses


Tohoku region, Japan / Showa period (1970s-80s)

Red - H: 13.5 cm (5.31in) / L: 10.5 cm (4.13in) / W: 3.4 cm (1.33in)
Black - H: 14.5 cm (5.70in) / L: 12 cm (4.72in) / W: 4.4 cm (1.73in)

Red one called Yawata-uma, from Hachinohe area in southern Aomori Prefecture, originally sold at annual festival of Kushihiki Hachimangu Shrine.
Black one called Miharu-goma, from Tamura county in Fukushima Prefecture, originally brought to the local area as amulet of child care.
Defined as the three major Japanese mingei wood carving horses (Nihon-Sankoma) including Kinoshita-goma of Miyagi Prefecture.
