Ancient Corinth was a Greek city-state in the southern mainland of Greece. While not as prominent a figure in textbooks as Athens or Sparta, Corinth played a major rule in most conflicts in Greek history. Most notably, when Persia attempted to invade Greece in the fifth century B.C., Corinth was chosen as the headquarters of the Hellenic League, an alliance of oftentimes rival Greek city-states formed to resist the invasion. Most importantly, the Corinthians took part in the major battle of Salamis (480 BC) with forty ships under the command of Adeimantos and contributed to a major victory that crippled the Persians' advance.
This beautiful alabstron is decorated with a large rooster, florets, and butterflies. Alabastrons were used by women to hold rare and expensive scented oils in antiquity. (In contrast, the aryballos was used to hold body oils for men.) AGE: Circa Sixth century B.C. CONDITION: Very nice shape and a steal at this price. Some minor professional restoration to the rim that is virtually invisible - photos available if desired. DIMENSIONS: About 3.5" tall |
