This nice hoard lot of silver dirhems dates to the rule of the early Mameluke sultanate of Egypt. In 1252, the sultan of Egypt was deposed by his bodyguards, who belonged to a class of Turkish slaves who had been brought to Egypt to serve as soldiers for the Ayyubid caliph. The soldier Aybak was placed on the throne after the coup, which began the line of Mameluke puppet caliphs known as the Abbasids. The Mamelukes ruled Egypt through their Abassid caliphs until 1517, when the Ottoman Empire conquered Egypt. Despite this defeat, the Mamelukes remained an important and powerful social group in Egypt as they remained in place as the rulers of Egypt under the Ottomans through the early 1800's, when Napolean's invasion fatally weakened their dynasty.
