Ancient Egyptian Amulet of Anubis, God of Embalming
Anubis, or Apnu, was one of the oldest Egyptian gods. His roles in Egyptian mythology are various and change over time and between regions, but he was generally held to be the patron deity of the embalming and mummification process. Additionally, he guided souls through the afterlife to face judgement before Osiris, who ruled the underworld, and some texts suggest that he had a role in the judgement process as well. Thus, Anubis was a god both venerated and feared: as the guide to salvation and the leader of souls to Osiris he was a beneficent god, but as the personification of death and the underworld, he was also a being who inspired terror. Indeed, his appearance as a jackal-headed man is likely due to the frequency with which wild jackals were seen prowling in the graveyards of the ancient Egyptians.
