Constantine X Dukas reigned over the Byzantine Empire from 1059-1067 A.D. His ascension was a major victory for the aristocracy as it was their pressure that led to his placement on the throne. Unfortunately, Constantine X turned out to be a poor leader, particularly because his decision to scale back the military to protect himself against a coup coincided with Norman attacks on Byzantine holdings in Italy and Seljuk Turkish attacks on the southern border of the empire. As with many Byzantine emperors, his incompetence was fortunately set off by the resourcefulness of his wife, Eudocia, who took over the empire on Constantine's death in 1067.
AGE: 1059-1067 A.D. CONDITION: Obverse features Constantine X & Eudocia, both crowned and holding between them a labarum with cross on the shaft. The reverse of the coin features a standing, Christ with halo carrying the Gospels. Condition overall is about Fine with an oblong flan and sloppy strike, but most bronze coins of Constantine X are in poor shape. From an old collection assembled in the 1950's, and includes the collector's original storage envelope with notes. DIMENSIONS: 1.25" in diameter at the widest point. |
