Thracian Coin: Chersonese Silver Half Drachm
The Thracians inhabited what is today Bulgaria, northeastern Greece, and parts of Turkey. Herodotus referred to them as one of the most numerous and powerful civilizations in the world, and they would have been considerably more threatening to the Greeks had they been a united people. However, the Thracians were splintered into many tribes that only occasionally formed short-lived, dominant states. Accordingly, they were largely overlooked by historians for centuries, although recent findings of incredible gold objects in the Thracian "Valley of Kings" in central Bulgaria has reignited interest in Thracian history.

AGE: 480-350 B.C.

CONDITION: Obverse features the forepart of a lion springing right and looking backwards over its left shoulder. Reverse features a quadripartite incuse square with a pellet and monogram ("H"). Overall in VF condition with a particularly crisp strike of the lion.

DIMENSIONS: 1/2" in diameter
