Roman Coin: Emperor Aurelian ae Antoninianus, 272 AD
Aurelian was born in Sirmium in 207 A.D. Although he came from a family of commoners, Aurelian rose in the military over the course of the reigns of several pervious emperors. Proclaimed emperor through military force around 270 A.D., he quickly solidified his position and leveraged his power into forcing the senate to legitimize his rule. Despite the military's reluctance to support him -- Aurelian was fiercely disciplined and demanding -- under his rule, the empire was restored to its largest extent except for the province of Dacia, which was abandoned permanently. Aurelian then embarked on a series of public works meant to restore the empire's shattered infrastructure. His brilliant rule was cut short by a court conspiracy ending in his assassination in 275 A.D.

RIC 347, Cohen 194. Obverse features a radiate portrait of Aurelian. The reverse features the inscription RESTITVTOR ORBIS, ("Aurelian restores the world") and a woman standing right, presenting a wreath to Aurelian.

AGE: 272-274 A.D.
