This heavy iron piece is an uncommon shovel or hoe blade from Roman Egypt. The blade is in good shape for iron, and although heavily oxidized, it is stable and a nice piece with an intact, square socket hole. See Petrie, "Tools and weapons illustrated by the Egyptian Collection in University College," pl. LXVII for similar. Formerly in Leighton A. Wilkie's extensive collection, which focused almost entirely on ancient tools.
AGE: 1st-2nd century A.D. CONDITION: Oxidized, but stable and intact with a good provenance. DIMENSIONS: 5" long (12.7 cm) |
