Ancient Egyptian Faience Amulet of Anubis -- Rare!
In later Egyptian mythology, the jackal-headed deity Anubis was identified as the god of embalming, the process of preparing a body for mummification. Ancient Egyptians believed that preserving the body was critical to ensuring an afterlife for the deceased; Anubis was responsible for protecting the body and ensuring that the mummification process preserved it so that the spirit would have a functional body to use in the afterlife. According to later legend, Anubis was the son of Osiris and Nephthys, and he first learned his craft by preparing his father's corpse for burial.

Anubis amulets are uncommon because they were not worn by the living; these were strictly funerary objects. Glazed faience Anubis amulets were produced from the Middle Kingdom through the end of the dynastic period, but they are not frequently seen on the market because they were not worn by everyday people in life.

This amulet was formerly in the collection of Alex Malloy.

AGE: Late Period, 712-332 BC

CONDITION: Substantially intact, although the suspension loop appears to have broken from the top in antiquity. The break point is quite aged and smooth.
