Blue Crystal Glazed Striped 'Vase' by Seto Hiroshi
Seto Hiroshi(1941-1994) was a leading Mashiko ceramic artist whose work is quite far from the 'standard' idea of what a Mashiko pot is. In fact, like fellow Mashiko potter and inspiration Kamoda Shoji, Seto boldly created new forms and glazing styles. He studied under Tomimoto Kenkichi(and also with Kondo Yuzo, Fujimoto Yoshimichi and Kiyomizu Kyubei) and was greatly influenced by his teachings, the same way Kamoda was. Seto moved to Mashiko in 1965. The stripe was a motif he is best known for on asymmetrical forms. This blue crystal glaze with stripe pattern silver overglaze 'vase' is a fine representative work of Seto's with light purple-blue and 'cherry petal' glazes and of course six sides of silver vertical stripes. The eye focuses in and out of the lines and the underlying glazes that creates a 3-D effect. Seto won many awards including a major prize at the 1983 Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition. This Seto 'vase' dates to 1989, in perfect condition with a signed box, 18cm.tallx16 (a good size for a desk), stamped on base. A Seto piece is in the permanent collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art and that striped piece is on their homepage.
