A lovely English-made buckle ring with scroll detail ornamenting the band. Buckle rings have been known since Victorian times. Various sources attribute strength, self-defense, and a close bond between giver and recipient to this motif. The ring is hallmarked for Birmingham and 9 ct. There is no date mark, but a 1976 control mark. The maker's mark is RP. The ring is approximately size 8 3/4.

This wonderful antique,French necklace has all of the Wow! factor you expect from French jewelry. It's 18 k gold (of course) open-work, with two palmate elements on each side. They join in a filigree-like round element that suspends a fifth, larger palmate element. The chain consists of three round links connecting marquise-shaped filigree links. The French eagle mark, indicating both French origin and 18 k gold, is on the clasp. The necklace is a generous 17 1/2" long. Circa 1890-1900

This lovely 15 ct gold Victorian ring has two rubies set off by three seed pearls. The design is surprisingly modern, with each ruby and pearl set in a square bezel. It has English hallmarks for Chester [England], 1865-6, and 15 carat gold, as well as a maker's mark of BHJ. The ring is a size 7.

Plique a jour, that unusual, difficult, and beautiful enameling technique that gives a stained glass effect, dates from the 15th century. It was used by Cellini, then revived in the late 1800s in France. This plique a jour pendant is centered with an oval opal and accented with eight colorless brilliants and a fresh water pearl dropper. The translucent enamel is an unusual and lovely blue in color. The metal is 900 silver, suggesting that the piece is most likely German or Austrian in origin...
