Not glass or plastic--it's a real stone. Also a real mystery. Whatever it is, it's a perfect compliment to the setting. Overall length is 2 3/8" and it dates from the early 1900s.

This Art Nouveau lavalier is 10 k gold and is set with a garnet/glass doublet* The pendant is 1 1/4" x 5/8" in size and is on a 16" gold filled chain. The dropper is a fresh water pearl. * Garnet glass doublets were popular in Victorian/Art Nouveau times; molded glass 'stones' were topped with a thin slice of garnet. Color comes from the glass, as the garnet is so thin that the red color is not apparent. Email me for information about the process.
