Opal & Plique a Jour Pendant
Plique a jour, that unusual, difficult, and beautiful enameling technique that gives a stained glass effect dates from the 15th century. It was used by Cellini, and revived in the late 1800s in France. This plique a jour pendant is centered with an oval opal and accented with eight colorless brilliants and a fresh water pearl dropper. The translucent enamel is an unusual and lovely blue in color. The metal is 900 silver, suggesting that the piece is most likely German or Austrian in origin. Circa 1900.
