This pair of wood carvings was made in the mid to late 19th century. We do not know the country of origin. They are 13 inches high, 13 inches long and 6 inches wide. We believe that the wood is mahogany. It is evident that they were carved by a master carver. They are executed with great detail. They are fantastic creatures with women’s heads, lion’s paws and fish’s bodies. They may have been part of a mantle piece or from an ornate piece of furniture. The tops of the heads are unfinished showing where they had been attached. They are somewhat reminiscent of the figureheads on clipper ships. What they can be used for is up to you. Just let your imagination go wild. The pair weighs approximately 12 1/2 pounds. Condition: There was old restoration to claws and a chip on its tail on one creature. Both have worm holes and some separations in the wood.
