This set of 12 bird plates was produced in England by the Cauldon factory in the 1890s. The plates measure 8 3/4 inches in diameter. They are made of fine, white bone china. The edges of the plates are fluted and the porcelain has a molded swirl design that is accented with gilding. The centers of the plates are expertly hand painted by the renowned artist, James Birbeck, who specialized in painting game birds. They are painted in fine detail and vivid color and are named on the back of each plate. The manner in which Birbeck painted the landscapes and sky shows his fine artistic abilities. The birds are shown in their individual natural enviorment. Every plate has some wonderful story to tell.
Condition: 11 of the plates are virtually unused and in excellent condition. 1 plate has minor use wear to the center. The gilding on all of the plates is intact. There is no crazing in the glaze on any of the plates.
