Birge Harrison, Shady Valley
Shady Valley, Birge Harrison 1854 - 1929, oil on canvas board, 8" by 10", signed and titled verso, Wm. H. Powell Fine Arts, 983 Sixth Ave., NYC label verso, framed in contemporary gilded frame, scattered retouch. Artist studied Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, traveled to Paris in 1876 to enroll in the atelier of Charles Carolus Duran and Ecoles des Beaux-Arts under Alexandre Cabanel. Returned to New York City and taught landscape painting and was Director of Art Students League. In 1905 helped to found Art Students League Summer School in Woodstock. Elected to National Academy of Design in 1910. Exhibited regularly at Society of American Artists, National Academy of Design, and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1889 until his death in Woodstock in 1929.
