| Son of renowned painter Charles Gruppe, Emile A. Gruppe 1896 - 1978, Afternoon Light 1917, oil on canvas board, 8 1/8" by 10 1/4", signed lower right, titled verso, 16 1/2" by 18 1/2" housed in 22K gilded frame, no apparent restorations. Dating derived from strong relationship to known larger dated version. Artist studied at the Grande Chaumiere, Paris, Carnegie Art School, National Academy of Design, and Art Students League, Woodstock, and Provincetown under John F. Carlson, Charles Hawthorne, Richard Miller, Charles Chapman, and George Bridgman. Founded Gruppe Summer School in 1942 in Gloucester, where he made his permanent studio. Member Allied Artists of America, Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Grand Central Art Galleries, Rockport Art Association, Gloucester Society of Artists, Woodstock Art Association, Salmagundi Club, and North Shore Art Association. | ||
