| Barbizon School and Impressionist painter Charles Francis Browne 1859 - 1920, River Rapids, oil on canvas, 12 1/8" by 16 1/8", signed lower right, 17 3/4" by 21 7/8" housed in contemporary frame with linen liner, lined with scattered retouch. Artist studied Boston Museum School 1882 - 1884, Pennsylvania Academy 1885 - 1887 with Thomas Eakins, Academie Julian 1887 - 1890 with Jean Leon Gerome, Jules-Joseph Lefebvre. Taught Art Institute of Chicago, shared studios with George Schreiber. Was founder of Brush and Pencil Club, President of Chicago Society of Artists, Director of Western Society of Artists. Exhibited Art Institute of Chicago, Boston Art Club, Chicago 1893 Columbian Exposition, Chicago Society of Artists, Corcoran Gallery Biennial, National Academy of Design, Panama-Pacific Exposition of 1915, Paris Salon, Pennsylvania Academy, Society of Western Artists, St. Louis Exposition-World's Fair 1904. Was stricken with paralysis at Eagle's Nest Art Colony 1919 and died the following year. | ||
