Carl E. Woolsey, Winter's Mantle
Carl E. Woolsey 1902 - 1965, Winter's Mantle, oil on masonite, 18" by 24", signed lower right, 25" by 31" housed in period reproduction carved gilded frame, no apparent restorations, minute 1mm. losses in trees(see photos). Artist born Illinois, lived and painted in Indiana, California, New Mexico, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. Largely self-taught, also took instruction from Henry Richter in Long Beach and Walter Ufer in Taos. Awarded Julius Hallgarten Prize from National Academy of Design 1931, participated in WPA/Federal Arts Project. Exhibited Corcoran Gallery, Washington D.C., Hoosier Salon, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
