Carnival Costume A jacket and pant set from Chiapas, Mexico Circa: early 1970's Depicts embroidered roosters as a sign of the festive and a reminder of the pagentry and color involved in the performance of joyous occasions. It has several bells sown on. The wearer is encouraged to dance energetically so as to make as much noise as possible. The outfit is quilted and is made of cotton fabric with silver lame ribbon sown on for accent. The outfit has been worn at many carnivals, not necessarily by the same person and was made in the early 70's. Purchased from a private collection on a trip to Chiapas, Mexico (2001). This is a rare and important museum quality folk art item. |
