The Huichol are one of the few Indigenous groups that were able to flee European invasion and maintain most of their traditional ways without having to alter them as a result of violent human encounter. They were able to flee from the lush coast of what is now Nayarit and fertile plains of what is now central Jalisco to hide in the desolate highlands of the Sierra Madre Occidental, in the dusty and harsh Altos de Jalisco. As a result their way of life changed to meet the demands of difficult climate and altitude. Many of those who live in the highlands continue to travel to their traditional lands including areas of San Luis Potosi to gather materials that are important to them, and as a connection to spaces and terrains that will always be part of their spiritual imagination. Huichol Bags are hand woven in patterns that have been used for centuries.

Traditionally they are made of cotton and the dyes are natural. The designs are geometric in shape and range from zigzag patterns to abstract formations, as well as depictions of eagles and deer. The bags are an important part of the traditional outfit, and are used ceremonially as well. Ceremonial bags are used to carry materials for Shamanic rituals, the contents of which are guarded and never discussed with outsiders or those who are not direct practitioners. Bags are also used for secular purposes to carry any materials that may be used during the day such as an instrument for cutting, rope, or a mesh bag for carrying larger objects. This bag was bought from a Shamanistic family from the Highlands of Jalisco that travels to the central part of the state. The bag dates from the 1990's ...
