Nude charcoal on paper by Irene Weir Dimensions: 12 x 18 in. Framed Provenance: Leon Sevilla Collection Studied: Yale School of Fine Arts League of New York; Academie, Paris and studied with J.H. Twachtman and J. Alden Weir. Index of Artists Biography by P. Havlice, The Scarcrow Press NY; Weir Irene 1858-1944 American painter etcher, Who's Who in American Art V.I 1936-37 V.III 1940-41. Born in West Point, NY in 1841. Elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design in 1864., and Academician in 1866. She was Director of Yale School of Fine Arts, 1869-1913. Principal works in sculpture; Statues of Presidents Woosley and Professor Silliman, of Yale. Executed many portraits and other works in paintings, notably "The Gun Foundry", "The Forging of the Shaft", "The Confessional", "An Artist's Studio", "Christmas Eve", "Tapping the Furnace", "Rain and Sunshine" "the Column of St. Marks, Venice". Author of "John Trumbull and his Works", 1902. Address in 1926, Yale University, New Haven, Ct. Died in 1926 |
